First edition. The first copy of the book specially bound in three volumes “for the author from his wife”, in tribute to Sadleir’s chief bibliographical obsession the Victorian triple-decker. Each volume has its own unique title page and each is bulked out with blanks to the rear. They are contained in a slip-case. The books are firmly bound in blue cloth with a yellow silk ribbon to the spine, the corners and spine ends are bumped and the spines are faded. The text blocks are a little toned and dusty. The slipcase is somewhat bumped and marked, with splits starting at some joins. The books are protected by loose plastic covers, possibly the originals as they are quite yellowed and with some loss and tears. A charming and unique copy of Sadleir’s most famous novel.
