First edition. Inscribed by Lawrence to the front endpaper: “To Norah With, as always my affectionate thanks! Margery Lawrence 1934”. The book is reasonably firmly bound in slightly bumped and rubbed black cloth, lettered in gilt to the spine. The text block is slightly foxed, toned and dusty. The dust jacket, designed by Youngman Carter, is the original and correctly priced at 7/6 to the spine, it is toned, with fading to the spine, also loss and short closed tears to the edges with signs of old tape repairs, it is rubbed and a bit fragile at the folds. A delightfully sinister mystery thriller, set in Cornwall, involving a young sadist and his mother, Madam Holle, who after years of haphazardly coping with her son’s sexual excesses settles on the scheme of buying a lonely house, populating it with servants with criminal records and advertising for pretty young victims, who in due course she murders when he is bored with them or they become too troublesome. A rare Lawrence title, particularly inscribed and with the dust jacket.
