First edition. The book is reasonably firmly bound in slightly bumped and rubbed dark blue cloth, lettered and simply decorated in gilt, there are some minor tears to the cloth. The text block is toned, dusty and slightly foxed with cracks at points and minor staining. A collection of loosely connected tales, the subject of which, as the title suggests, is a female pearl broker; a lady thrown upon her own resources by the death of her husband who takes on a dangerous trade which sees her fighting off burglars and being drugged by dubious oriental types, before in typical late Victorian fashion re-marrying and escaping from its perils. Very uncommon.
