First edition. Three volumes. Inscribed by Haggard to the half-title of volume I: “To Ella Green, From her affectionate brother, The Author. February 1885.”. Ella Green being Haggard’s sister. The books are bound in the publisher’s olive green cloth, lettered in silver gilt to spines and front boards. There is fraying to spine ends, the spines are a little discoloured and there is minor edge wear and scuffing, also a few marks. The text blocks are toned and slightly foxed with cracking at points, vol III has faired worse than the other two and the block has split towards the middle with several gatherings loose and nearly detached. An excellent association copy, inscribed in the year of publication, of the author’s uncommon second novel, of which only 500 copies were printed.
