First edition. Inscribed by Crompton to the half title page: “To “The Dishers” with the author’s love & with acknowledgments pp164“ 183.”, “The Dishers” being Crompton’s sister, Gwen and her family. The book is reasonably firmly bound in somewhat bumped and stained red cloth, lettered in black, the spine is slightly faded, there is a small chunk missing from the front board and the boards are bowed. The text block is quite stained, foxed and toned. The dust jacket is correct and an original, but judging by the condition of the boards has either spent most of its life separate from the book or is supplied from another copy, it is quite grubby and chipped with some short closed tears to the edges. Quite an uncommon early Crompton title and rare signed, with the added significance of being a family association.
