First edition. Formerly the property of Peter Farrer, notable senior tax-inspector and cross-dresser, with some forty passages marked in pencil then referenced with notes by Farrer to the rear endpaper and pastedown, most of the notes being on the themes of disguise and cross-dressing within the novel. The book is firmly and squarely bound in clean, slightly bumped black cloth, lettered in gilt. The text block is slightly toned and foxed. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, it is slightly rubbed and creased to the edges with fading to the spine. An interesting association copy of an uncommon Carter first edition.
